It was a night to remember for G.S Stothers Mechanical and Electrical Engineering at the Northern Ireland Electrical Awards on Friday night. With a Special Recognition Award for Founder and Technical Director, Sam Stothers, and a highly commended award in the Specialist Contractor of the Year category.
Northern Ireland’s Electrical Awards 2023 took place at a prestigious ceremony at the Crowne Plaza, Shaws Bridge on Friday 2 June. The awards recognised the achievements of the top electrical contractors, consultants, suppliers, people, products, and projects across Northern Ireland.
The Special Recognition Award recognises individuals who have played an exemplary role within Northern Ireland’s electrical sector. The award celebrates people who have shown leadership and innovation within their role, as well as dedication and commitment to every aspect of their business or career. George Samuel Stothers, affectionately known as "Sam", has been a driving force in the mechanical and electrical engineering industry for more than 40 years. With an unwavering commitment to his craft, Sam's remarkable journey is a testament to his resilience, expertise, and entrepreneurial spirit.
Four decades ago, Sam and his colleagues received the shocking news that they would be made redundant within a mere 24 hours. This revelation came at a critical juncture, as they were deeply involved in a large-scale project that heavily relied on Sam and his team for its successful completion.
Colt Group, the project's suppliers, recognised Sam's exceptional skills and approached him with a proposition. They asked if he would be willing to establish his own venture to ensure the project's continuity. Responding swiftly to the challenge, Sam partnered with colleague Norman Friar, who later sold his stake back to Sam. In 1986, G.S Stothers was founded, becoming the sole distributor for Colt Group in Northern Ireland.
Thanks to the strong relationships Sam had forged throughout his career, G.S Stothers flourished. Sam took the initiative to build a warehouse from scratch, marking the beginning of the company's venture into manufacturing smoke and fire curtains. This expansion propelled them into the realm of smoke control within the industry, established them as Northern Irelands Smoke Control Specialists.
Despite facing several setbacks, including a burglary that saw the theft of valuable assets, including cheque books and (even their guard dog!), Sam persevered and built a reputable business spanning Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, and mainland UK.
Assisting Sam every step of the way, his wife Maureen expertly managed the company's finances. Together, they raised four sons, one of whom has now assumed the role of Managing Director, ensuring the continuation of the family business. Jonney Stothers, mentored by his father throughout his life, embraced his early passion for the industry and is now carrying the company forward, nurturing Sam's enduring legacy for many years to come.
Managing Director, Jonney Stothers comments, "Friday night was a proud moment as I accepted a Special Recognition Award at the Northern Ireland Electrical Awards on behalf of my Dad, Sam Stothers. He has become a legend in the mechanical and electrical engineering industry and his 40-year journey is a testament to his resilience, expertise, and entrepreneurial spirit. This award celebrates leaders who show innovation, dedication, and commitment to their craft. And boy, does my Dad tick all those boxes! He's a true inspiration to all who know him, and the reason I have gotten to where I am today.
From humble beginnings to building a thriving business, he's always been at the forefront of his industry. His unwavering passion and expertise have made him a driving force in the business world.
While Dad was the one receiving the award, it goes without saying that Mum has played a significant role in his success. She expertly managed the finances and kept Dad on his path to success while raising me and my three brothers. So, this award is also part hers, and we couldn't be prouder of both of them.
We were thrilled to be highly commended in the Specialist Contractor of the Year category, and finalists in the Small Commercial Project of the Year category for our work on the Ulster University Belfast project, but the most treasured accolade has to be the Special Recognition Award.
Dad's legacy in the industry is secure, and we can't wait to see what the future holds for this incredible man. Congratulations, Dad from the whole team!"
